Since our opening in 1860, W Hamond has also become famed for being the Original Whitby Jet Shop opening its doors during a time when the height of Whitby Jet jewellery production was at its greatest.
Located at the top of Whitby's historic Church Street and at the foot of the famous Abbey steps, the W Hamond Whitby boutique remains in the same spot as the Original Whitby Jet Store becoming an irreplaceable part of the town’s heritage. All of our award-winning jewellery collections are created using only the finest Whitby Jet stone found on the north east coast of Yorkshire, most frequently in seams of shale between Robin Hood's Bay and Boulby.

It was during the 1860’s when Queen Victoria reigned over Britain that the jet-black stone grew in popularity. After the death of her husband Albert, Queen Victoria swore she would only wear Whitby Jet jewellery during her mourning. As Whitby town became a prime holiday destination, Jet jewellery also soared in status and became a fashionable souvenir for Crinoline-clad ladies to purchase on their visit.
