Meet the Oris Big Crown Pointer Date Calibre 473 Watch

Jewellery & Watch News

Swiss watchmaker is starting 2023 off right the launch of their tenth in-house developed movement and in turn completely reinterpreting the functionality of their legendary Big Crown Pointer Date watch. The new Oris Calibre 473 movement boasts the same performance, anti-magnetism and 120-hour long power reserve as previous Calibre 400 movements but is now hand-wound and comes with an integrated power reserve indicator on the back. Let us introduce you to the new Oris Big Crown Pointer Date Calibre 473 watch

Oris have an extensive history creating in-house movements. In fact, before the quartz crisis of the 1970’s, the Swiss manufacturer created more than 270 calibres since their founding in 1904. Following the quartz crisis, Oris decided it was time to revive their role in creating beautiful mechanical watches and in 2014, they launched their first in-house movement since their origins with the launch of the manual-winding Calibre 110. This movement boasted an impressive 10-day single-barrel power reserve. Then in 2020, Oris announced yet another series of manufacture movements with the Calibre 400 series. The three-hand-and-date automatic winding movement debuted within the Oris Aquis series and has since evolved into the Calibre 401 with added small seconds and the Calibre 403 with a pointer date mechanism. Now joining the line-up is the Oris Calibre 473 movement

The Oris Calibre 473 movement stands out from its predecessors not only for being manual-winding but for its unique integrated power reserve indicator. Through the back of the Oris Big Crown Pointer Date Calibre 473 watch, you can spot the indicator on the bridge over the barrel, displaying the remaining power reserve out of 120 hours. The scale is engraved in blue to match with the blue indicator hand. The Calibre 473 movement still maintains all the resilience and accuracy of previous Calibre 400 movements with elevated levels of anti-magnetism and an accuracy well within COSC tolerances at -3/+5 seconds a day. Each Oris Big Crown Pointer Date Calibre 473 watch also comes with a 10 year warranty and a 10 year recommended service interval.

On the dial, the Oris Big Crown Pointer Date Calibre 473 watch delivers the well-known Oris pointer date complication which sees the traditional central seconds hand replaced by a long, red-tipped hand extending out to a white printed date track. Instead, the seconds are positioned in a subsidiary counter at 6 o’clock. Much of the hardware on the dial here is white, beautifully contrasting against the muted sky blue dial, while the hands for the hours and minutes are silvered. The hands, numerals and indexes are also joined by Superluminova inserts for glow in the dark readability.

Framing the dial of the Oris Big Crown Pointer Date Calibre 473 watch is the familiar 38mm stainless steel architecture of the Big Crown family. The smooth, fixed bezel is joined by domed sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective treatment and at 3 o’clock, a stainless steel screw-in security crown provides a 50 metre water resistant rating. So you can admire the new hand-wound movement and its power reserve indicator, the case back also incorporates sapphire crystal glass. Securing the Oris Big Crown Pointer Date Calibre 473 watch to the wrist is an olive brown leather strap crafted by Oris’ Swiss partner Cervo Volante. It closes by a new Oris stainless steel butterfly folding clasp with a fine-adjustment system.
