Jewellery & Watch News
Discover our stunning new Valkyrie jewellery collection at W Hamond, designed to celebrate the eccentric characters of Whitby’s legendary Steampunk weekend and the vintage timepieces, antique metal and 19th-century industrial steam-powered machinery that inspire it.
Since the seaside town’s annual Steampunk celebrations would have been held just a few weeks ago, having unfortunately been cancelled due to the coronavirus, we wanted to relive the weekend by exploring our unique Valkyrie jewellery collection with you all. The intricate and unique designs are all handmade in our workshops in Whitby where our talented craftsmen and women use traditional bench skills, restoration and engraving techniques to create industrial inspired works of art.
In Norse mythology, a valkyrie or valkyrja is known as the "chooser of the slain" and describes a host of strong female figures known for their vast prestige and power. They were one of the few factions of warrior women from ancient lore recognized as having any power over the mortal realm and they would choose who would die in battle and who would live. It is women like these, modern-day female warriors who prove formidable and influential, that we hope love and wear our Valkyrie jewellery.
Whitby’s Steampunk weekend is similarly filled with women of stature, dressed in an aesthetic based on a mixture of science fiction and the 19th century style of the Victorian era. From corsets to bustles, fascinators to top hats and copper monocles, the industrial-inspired fashion pairs perfectly with our W Hamond Valkyrie collection. We have a breathtaking collection of designs decorated with honeycomb detailing, sugar skull engravings and antique inspired brass and silver plated accents that would look striking paired with both Steampunk attire and conventional dress.
One of our favourite pieces within the Valkyrie jewellery collection is the W Hamond Valkyrie Elaborate Globe Watch Skull Necklace. This remarkably unique piece features a pocket watch with a skeletonised dial as part of the design encased in a globe pendant. Hanging below is a finely engraved sugar skull and a vintage brass chain. The Valkyrie Double Decker Cathedral Window Necklace is another best-seller and is inspired by the gothic architecture of Whitby’s legendary Abbey with a cathedral window style design housing a sugar skull decoration inside.
