Founded in 1860, W Hamond is otherwise known as the Original Whitby Jet Shop celebrated for transforming the unique black gemstone of Whitby Jet into breathtaking pieces of fine jewellery. Our history first began when James Storr opened the doors to the original boutique in 1860 in the very same spot the W Hamond Whitby boutique resides, at the bottom of the 199 steps beneath Whitby Abbey on Church Street. To this day, W Hamond remains an unmovable part of the town’s heritage and locals and tourists alike come from all over to witness our Whitby Jet jewellery creations.
Whitby Jet has been found in several other parts of the world, but it is only on the north-east cost of Yorkshire in England where the finest Whitby Jet is sourced. After the semi-precious stone has been mined from the cliffs, our talented team of craftsmen and women work to shape and polish them into the stunning gold and silver pieces you can see on our website and in our stores. Every piece of Whitby Jet jewellery is completely unique to the stone that beholds it. We may sometimes take a large and imperfect piece of raw material and make it into a single, stunning pendant or brooch rather than cutting it to make several smaller items.
