Jewellery & Watch News
Satisfying the ears, eyes and wrists of vintage watch lovers, Swiss watch manufacturer Certina has launched a new collection of DS-2 Powermatic watches for 2022. There are four designs in total, each reviving some of the original aesthetics of the inaugural 1960’s line with some welcome improvements to the case size, movement and glass.
The Certina DS-2 has long been a line of dress watches favoured by vintage watch collectors. The series was first introduced in 1968 and became renowned for its tough construction and double security technology – hence its “DS” label. Certina’s double security system was designed to counteract dust, water and other foreign particles from entering the case and protect the movement from any nasty shocks. Over the years, the technology has defined the Swiss watch brand as a connoisseur of durable outdoor and diver’s watches, while also offering the same tough standard alongside sophisticated aesthetics worthy of a formal dress watch - as seen in the Certina DS-2.
For the new 2022 collection of Certina DS-2 watches, the Grenchen-born manufacturer adds some distinguishable improvements to the retro design for the modern wrist. The period-correct tonneau-shaped stainless steel architecture is increased in size to 40mm in diameter and 12.56mm in height. We’re also welcome to anti-reflective domed sapphire crystal glass in replacement of less scratch resistant Plexiglass and a screw down crown water resistant to 200 metres. The case features a combination of brushed and polished surfaces.
For the dials of the new Certina DS-2 Powermatic 80 watches, there is plenty of choice. There are four watches in total, two with a lacquered black display, one in sunray silver and a final design in sunray blue. Each are subjected to similar shaped hardware as their 1960’s predecessors with baton hands and indexes and an arrow-tipped seconds hand. A silver framed date window sits at 3 o’clock while the original double-C Certina logo is presented at 12 o’clock. The markers and hands are also subjected to Superluminova inserts.
One of the biggest upgrades for the new 2022 Certina DS-2 watches is the movement. Certina applies their legendary Powermatic 80 calibre to all four watches offering anti-magnetism thanks to its Nivachron hairspring and an extended power reserve of 80 hours. The automatic winding movement also boasts a frequency of 21,600vph and 23 jewels. You can enjoy the Swiss made calibre and its branded, sunray brushed rotor through the exhibition sapphire crystal glass case back.
Lastly, the Certina DS-2 watches are completed by a fabric strip made of #tide recycled fabric or a stainless steel mesh bracelet. The black lacquered dials opt for the steel bracelet or a matching black textile strap while the blue sunray display follows suit on a blue coloured #tide band. Meanwhile, the silver dialled Certina DS-2 Powermatic watch elects an anthracite-coloured textile strap. Those on the textile straps retail at £770 while the mesh bracelet model is offered at £825.
