Swiss watch manufacturer Oris launches their next Change for the Better Limited Edition, the 2,000-piece Oris New York Harbour watch designed in support of the Billion Oyster Project. The non-profit organisation aims to restore one billion oysters to New York Harbour following the sharp decline in population in line with the growth of New York City and the increase in pollution happening in the harbour’s waters.
“Oysters, like trees, are ecosystem engineers. They form the three-dimensional structure and habitat of the ecosystem. Historically, oyster reefs in New York Harbor provided food and habitat for hundreds of other species, filtered the water, and protected the shores from waves and storms. Based on Oris’ best-selling Aquis diver’s watch, the Oris New York Harbour Limited Edition’s real novelty is its dial which is crafted from mesmerising green mother of pearl. The seafoam iridescence was chosen to mimic the colour of the harbours waters and the shimmer found inside an oyster shell. It is a beautiful addition to the tool watch aesthetic, becoming in itself a powerful symbol of ocean conservation. The dial also presents applied indexes, baton hour and minute hands and a lollipop seconds hand subjected to Superluminova treatment for easy legibility in all lighting conditions. The hardware is kept protected beneath sapphire crystal glass, domed on both sides and coated with anti-reflective treatment.
The case of the Oris Aquis New York Harbour Limited Edition watch maintains all the arrangement of predecessors with a durable stainless steel architecture equipped with a unidirectional bezel on top. The bezel is ratcheted for easy manipulation, engineered from steel and adorned with a 60 minute scale in relief. The case sits on the wrist at 41.5mm in height and is secured by a choice of two straps, both delivered together as part of each 2,000 piece limited edition. The first is a sporty green rubber strap which matches beautifully with the dial. The second is a multi-piece stainless steel bracelet closed by a folding buckle.
The Oris New York Harbour watch remains a powerful diving instrument thanks to its screw in security crown and 300 metre water resistant rating. The screw down case back also assists, adding a nice touch with a unique decoration of three oysters. Hiding behind it is the well-known Oris 733 automatic winding movement which powers the hours, minutes, seconds and date functions. We’re also treated to a frequency of 28,800vph and a power reserve of 38 hours.
