Jewellery & Watch News
With the Watches & Wonders 2023 event in full swing, we’re inundated with an amazing selection of new watches. Swiss watchmaker Oris is leading the way for luxury watch manufacture as always, heading the event with two huge launches. The first is a serious-looking tool watch, the Oris ProPilot Altimeter which allows you to monitor the time, date, altitude and air pressure from a single mechanical watch. The second is a distinctively different model, one that celebrates the “Joy of Mechanics”. Let’s take a look at this bright green-dialled Oris ProPilot X Kermit Edition watch…
To create the new Oris ProPilot X Kermit Edition watch, the Holstein-based watch manufacturer has partnered up with Disney’s The Muppets. Together, they have come up with the idea of “Kermit Day”, celebrated on the first day of every month when the image of Kermit the Frog will appear at the date window of the special edition’s dial. It’s a brilliant way to execute a collaboration, with the Kermit reference remaining a secret 29 to 30 days of the month and only appearing on the first day of the month. The date window appears at 6 o’clock and is presented on a bright lime green display inspired by the colour of Kermit the Frog’s skin. The dial is subtly textured and mimics previous Oris ProPilot X watches with needle-shaped, blacked out hands for the hours, minutes and seconds and baton indexes. The two key central hands also glow in the dark thanks to their Superluminova inserts.
Oris’ Creative Director Ken Laurent speaks on the new Oris ProPilot X Kermit Edition watch: “Let me ask you this: what is a mechanical watch for? We talk a lot about functions in a literal sense, but really, the purpose of an Oris watch is to make people smile. That’s it. And with the ProPilot X Kermit Edition, there’s nothing else to it. Ok, yes, it’s powered by a brilliant movement and the case design is spectacular, but the function of this watch is really simple: to bring joy”.
The rest of the specifications for the Oris ProPilot X Kermit Edition watch are the same as the ProPilot X watches launched last year. We’re given the raw, urban-inspired ProPilot X case with a 39mm diameter, 11.8mm height and knurled bezel. The entire case, including the screw in crown at 3 o’clock, crown guards and screwed down case back, is engineered from lightweight titanium and is joined by sapphire crystal glass on both the front and back. Through the back of the watch you can see the intricate workings of the Oris Calibre 400 movement. This in-house mechanism is a work of art in itself, delivering high levels of magnetic resistance, a 5 day power reserve and an accuracy rating of -3 to +5 seconds a day. It also carries a 10-year warranty and 10-year recommended service interval. Despite its dressy look, the Oris ProPilot X Kermit Edition watch promises a 100 metre water resistant rating.
Completing the Oris ProPilot X Kermit Edition watch is a streamline, three-row link titanium bracelet which is as equally as light as the case. The bracelet closes by a classic folding buckle.
