An Introduction to the Garmin MARQ 2 Smartwatch

Jewellery & Watch News

Whether you’re calling it the MARQ II, the MARQ 2 or the MARQ (Gen 2), the next generation of the Garmin MARQ smartwatch is here and it comes with improved battery power, a sleek new AMOLED display, and new TopoActive maps and NextFork™ features to enjoy.

The new Garmin MARQ 2 series brings with it a choice of straps and bezel finishes across five models; the MARQ 2 Athlete, MARQ 2 Adventurer, MARQ 2 Golfer, MARQ 2 Aviator and MARQ 2 Captain. Its new crisp and full-colour AMOLED display is now protected by a tough sapphire glass exterior with a 390 x 390 pixel resolution to make full use of. An improved power life of 16 hours (versus the original 12-hour battery life of the original MARQ series) is now guaranteed, promising any athlete, adventurer or fitness fanatic hours and hours of wearable smartwatch technology.

The origins of the Garmin MARQ

The Garmin MARQ launch was revealed back in 2019 with the MARQ Driver, MARQ Aviator, MARQ Captain, MARQ Adventurer and MARQ Athlete, followed by the MARQ Commander and a special-edition MARQ Captain: the American Magic Edition. The design concept of the collection was 30 years in the making and was the next step up from the Fenix 5, with all-around new and improved health and fitness apps. By combining cutting-edge technology with high-grade materials, Garmin’s business segments; aviation, automotive, fitness, outdoor and marine were brought into focus with areas of flying, racing and sports. Superior connectivity promised a wearable touchscreen tool combined with a supreme selection of materials including titanium, sapphire, ceramic, diamond-like carbon coating, jacquard-weave nylon straps and Italian vacchetta leather bands. The Garmin MARQ was suitable for flying, sailing, outdoor adventures and driving, all enhanced by a QuickFit attachment mechanism for easy watch strap changes. Finally, pilots could now rely on precise navigation. Motorists could travel using turn-by-turn directional assistance.

All watches of the MARQ series included the same baseline; a full global database of ski resorts, maps and runs, a full global database of golf courses, and sports apps that include swimming, biking, running, golfing and skiing. In addition to this, they offered; the PulseOx SpO2 measurement, detailed regional maps, music and storage features, Garmin Pay, and the Garmin ELEVATE optical HR sensor. Its 46mm size was topped with a ceramic bezel with a battery life of 12 days in watch mode, 28hrs in GPS mode, or 48hrs in the UltraTrac GPS mode. All watches from the MARQ series also featured a lightweight titanium casing and a hard sapphire crystal glass lens.

Whilst some of the finishes and bezel styles differed between the models, the MARQ Driver was the model that featured a hybrid bracelet with a tough titanium exterior and a soft inner section. Supplied with 250 well-known race tracks, the Driver model also had a track timer, auto lap splits, and live delta time features. The Garmin MARQ Aviator was fitted on a titanium multi-link bracelet and boasted a unique “swept wing” design. Its aviation maps, Nexrad Weather Radar, airport information and Garmin cockpit integration brought effortless air-bound technology to the fingertips, as well as a dual time zone feature and airport codes that could be accessed via the GMT bezel.

With its regatta timing bezel, the Garmin MARQ Captain provided access to current wind speed, temperature and tide information, as well as coastal charts and tack assist features, not to mention port conditions shown on the watch face. The MARQ Expedition was the Garmin smartwatch that offered TOPO mapping, featured a built-in altimeter, a barometer, and a compass and was compatible with the inReach Mini satellite communicator. There was also the ClimbPro app to enjoy with this model, providing real-time elevation, gradient and distance information. But for many, the MARQ Athlete was the smartwatch to own for all serious health and fitness trainers. Performance metrics could be tracked via features like the V02 max and a recovery time scale on the bezel and its supple silicone rubber band was both lightweight and sweat-resistant for plenty of hours at the gym.

The new generation of MARQ Smartwatch; the MARQ 2

New to the MARQ stratosphere is the MARQ Gen 2 watch, otherwise named the MARQ II or the MARQ 2. Available in the Athlete, Aviator, Captain, Golfer and Adventurer models, they boast a new grade 5 titanium case and a new AMOLED touchscreen display. Across the range is a plethora of features including; built-in sport apps, TopoActive mapping, NextFork™, ClimbPro, a worldwide aeronautical database, NEXRAD weather radar, a regatta timer enhanced with GPS technology, and advanced golf game tracking data with more than 42,000 preloaded golf courses.

The ultra-responsive touchscreen of the new Garmin MARQ II series is paired with easy push buttons that will work in any environment, whilst a multi-band GNSS with integrated SatIQ™ technology will secure the very best accuracy no matter where you are in the world and simultaneously preserves power usage. All the usual Garmin MARQ features are still intact, such as its music storage, Garmin Pay™ contactless payments1, wrist-based heart rate2, daily activity tracking2, sleep monitoring2 and smart notifications³. The newer generation is still compatible with Apple® and Android™ devices too.

Aside from all this, the new generation of Garmin MARQ watches also promises a new and improved battery life of up to 16 days compared to its former 12-day battery power, as well as 21 days in Battery Saver Mode, 75 hours in Max Battery GPS mode, or 14 days in the Expedition GPS mode. A new jetlag advisor is perfectly tailored to those who frequently travel on business or for leisure. It enables the wearer to balance light exposure with a devised sleep schedule and exercise plan to follow to minimise the unwanted effects of jetlag whilst country hopping.
