Jewellery & Watch News
Oris have long proven themselves as flag-bearers for bringing awareness to the state of our oceans, particularly to the frightful depletion of natural corals. We have seen a remarkable number of timepieces released from the Swiss watch manufacturer over the years that have raised both our attention to these matters and money for corresponding organisations. For 2020, Oris show no signs of stopping in their efforts with the release of the stunning new Oris Aquis Carysfort Reef Limited Edition watch.
This breathtaking timepiece is making waves for all the right reasons. It not only marks the first solid gold diving watch to be released by the brand, but the Oris Aquis Carysfort Reef Limited Edition has been designed in collaboration with the Coral Restoration Foundation to help assist in the protection of the Carysfort Reef. This endangered ecosystem forms part of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, which makes up the third largest barrier reef in the world and the only one in the United States. Unfortunately, over the last 50 years, the reef has become severely degraded with coral populations declining by around 98%. Since their first partnership in 2014, Oris has continued to work with the Coral Restoration Foundation and the new Oris Carysfort Reef watch carries on that support.
In most of the ‘environmentally friendly’ Oris watches that we have seen, we have witnessed similar designs but with different coloured dials, modified movements or case sizes. Yet, with the Oris Aquis Carysfort Reef Limited Edition, we are treated to an entirely new 18 carat yellow gold case, a material that the brand had yet to use within their Aquis collection. The case measures to 43.5mm in size and is fitted with a black ceramic bi-directional rotating bezel decorated with a 24 hour scale. The screw in security crown and screw down case back are also crafted from 18 carat yellow gold and provide a water resistant rating of 300 metres.
The 18 carat yellow gold aesthetic pairs perfectly with the ocean blue dial and strap. Housed beneath scratch resistant sapphire crystal coated with an anti-reflective treatment on the inside, the blue sunray dial features central hands for hours, minutes, seconds and GMT, a 24 hour scale and a date window at 3 o clock. For easy legibility under the waves, the hand and indexes are also coated in glow in the dark Superluminova. The matching blue leather strap includes a waterproof rubber coating and an 18 carat rose gold pin buckle.
Driving the functions on the Oris Aquis Carysfort Reef Limited Edition watch is the Oris 798 calibre, a automatic winding movement based on Sellita SW 33-1. With 28 jewels, a 42 hour power reserve and its handy GMT indication, the calibre was a perfect choice for the limited edition. Instead of offering a glimpse into the movement, the solid 18 carat yellow gold screw down case back is beautifully decorated with a special engraving of the coral reef, once again highlighting the issues surrounding these precious ecosystems.
