What Is St Patrick’s Day?

Saint Patrick’s Day has been celebrated for over a thousand years. The holiday is all about honouring Irish culture and spreading love and joy to one another. The celebratory day is also about gifting to one another and sharing time, food and drink with friends and family. The special day has come a long way since the 17th century, when the 17th March was turned into a feast day. Today, the date is actively celebrated by the Catholic Church, as well as the Anglican Communion and others. In Ireland, the day is an official holiday but is also celebrated all around the world. The vibrant bars, public parades and vivid green decorations have all become traditions in this celebration of St Paddy’s Day, constituting the perfect excuse to indulge in a piece of green-coloured jewellery.

Why Green is So Symbolic

The “Isle of Green”, as it is known, boasts rolling hills and luscious countryside. The rich green fields have captured the hearts of people for many, many centuries. Saint Patrick himself loved the colour green, however, and it is for this reason that green has become so intrinsically linked with Ireland. That and his clever use of the three-leaf shamrock, of course. The shamrock was used to explain the Holy Trinity to the pagan Irish and soon became the symbol of Irish heritage. Then, when St Patrick’s Day became a feast day during the 17th Century, wearing green became a tradition. It became a way for the people of Ireland to express their pride in their heritage. Wearing green on this holiday is now a must-do. It matters not whether you are of Irish descent or just enjoying the celebrations at home, there are many ways to celebrate the colour through fashion and jewellery.

Green Malachite

Green gemstones are a great way to mark Saint Paddy’s Day. Aside from the classic Emerald stone, or the cheerful greens of Tourmaline and the lighter shades of Peridot - Malachite is a great alternative. The stone has been mined from as early as 4,000 BC and became popular as a pigment for ancient paintings. The Victorians also created some eye-catching jewellery designs using Malachite. Today the gemstone, known as an emotional healer, is incorporated into some of our most elegant fine jewellery designs here at W Hamond. From contemporary sterling silver designs to traditional gold creations – our Bloom jewellery collection is brimming with alluring earrings, necklaces, rings and bracelets that are sure to put an Irish spin to your attire this St Patrick’s Day.

Sterling Silver Malachite Bloom Marquise Flower Ring R1276

This ultra-feminine four-leaf flower design subtly nods to the colours of St Patrick’s Day and to the four-leaf concept that has become so well-associated with the holiday. In this ring design, it features four tapering marquise-shaped petals crafted from Malachite, trimmed in a delicate rope-like detailing. The rich green hues of the Malachite stone are a perfect match for the lustrous sterling silver shades of the band and framework. In addition to this, another layer of detail is donated to the design. The rope-like detailing continues into the band itself, wrapping itself around the circumference of the finger and adding a new dimension to the design.
