Jewellery & Watch News
As 2022 marks the 140th year of the Zodiac watch brand, the Swiss manufacturer pushes the boundaries of luxury watch design with the launch of their first Zodiac Super Sea Wolf watch engineered from ceramic. Lightweight and scratch resistant, ceramic is the perfect material for exploring the deep blue sea.
Ceramic was first used in watchmaking during the 1980’s and has since become a highly utilised material for its vast range of benefits. As well as being lightweight and scratch resistant, ceramic can be coloured into a range of breathtaking hues and is corrosion-resistant, fade-resistant and hypoallergenic. The engineering process typically involves using inorganic, non-metallic powders, most commonly developed for aerospace and other high-tech industries, that are sintered at high temperatures to create the polished and solid material. For the new Zodiac Super Sea Wolf Ceramic watch, the inner case is engineered from stainless steel while the outer case is entirely manufactured from black ceramic. The finish is gorgeous and gives the usually sporty architecture an urban edge.
“We’ve always been attracted by the allure of ceramic,” says Zodiac creative director, Ryan White. “Not only for its resistance to wear and color fading over time but the opportunities it allows us to explore creatively.”
The shape of the Zodiac Super Sea Wolf Ceramic watch’s case is the same as previous editions, measuring to 40mm in diameter with sloped lugs, a screw in crown at 3 o’clock and a stainless steel solid case back. The latter two enables a 200 metre water resistance for decent diving capability while the unidirectional rotating bezel allows you to measure elapsed dive times using its 60 minute scale and luminous pip at 12 o’clock. The case is completed by a hypoallergenic Tropic caoutchouc 20mm rubber strap that has been vanilla scented.
At the centre of the Zodiac Super Sea Wolf Ceramic watch is a stunning midnight blue radiant sunburst dial with opposing white hands and markers with Superluminova inserts. Superluminova is a luminous material which allows you to read the hours, minutes and seconds function even in the dark. Powering the hands and the square-shaped date window at 3 o’clock is the Swiss-made STP 1-11 automatic movement. It also adds a 44-hour power reserve.
The Zodiac Super Sea Wolf Ceramic watch is a limited edition of only 500 pieces and is available to order now on the W Hamond website here. You can also secure one of the watches by contacting the team by calling 01947 603330 or by sending us a message at info@whamond.com.
