Jewellery & Watch News
One of the most notable bronze watches of the last decade was the 2016 Oris Carl Brashear Limited Edition. The patina-changing case spoke to collectors immediately, promising to uniquely age and change alongside the wearer. Since then, many luxury watch names have utilised bronze in their collections but none more so than Swiss watch manufacturer Oris. Today the material returns in full force with the launch of the Oris Big Crown Pointer Date Bronze collection.
The Oris Big Crown Pointer Date watch has been a pivotal piece in the brand’s collections ever since its introduction in 1938. It was created especially for thick glove-wearing pilots with its fluted bezel, legible dial and oversized 3 o’clock crown. Eighty years later, and the design still governs the brand’s portfolio offering the same retro style as its predecessor but with some new technologies and an adapted crescent-shaped date hand painted in red. In 2018, Oris marked eight decades of the design with its first full bronzed case Big Crown Pointer Date with a deep green dial and dark brown leather strap. We’ve also seen several two-toned references with bronze bezels and stainless steel cases. Now, for the very first time, the Swiss watch manufacturer launches the Oris Big Crown Pointer Date with a full bronze case and matching bronze bracelet.
Delivering all the familiar attributes of previous Big Crown Pointer Date watches, the new full-bronze collection opts for a 40mm case with the statement fluted bezel, oversized knurled crown and 12mm height. As you can see, all of these features are engineered from bronze which will eventually develop its own unique patina and change colour over time. To match, the case now comes fitted with a multi-link full bronze bracelet which will equally age along with the case. The Oris Big Crown Pointer Date Bronze watches also deliver double-domed sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective treatment on the inside, a screwed down steel case back and a 50 metre water resistant rating.
For now, the full bronze Oris Big Crown Pointer Date is available in four dials colours: green, brown, Bordeaux-red and blue. Each shade works perfectly with the warmth of the bronze cases and comes fitted with matching gold-coloured hands for the hours, minutes and seconds with the former two beautifully styled in the vintage cathedral shape. The hours and minutes are also coated with a layer of Superluminova to pair with the large Arabic numerals. Around the edge of the dials is the distinctive date track which works alongside a fourth central hand with a red crescent tip to display the date.
Powering the Oris Big Crown Pointer Date Bronze watches is the Oris Calibre 754, the very same that fuels the remaining Pointer Date series. It is modelled after the Sellita SW 200-1 and provides 26 jewels, a frequency of 28,800vph and a power reserve of 38 hours. Turn the bronze Oris watches over and you can admire the movement through the exhibition sapphire crystal case back alongside the signature Oris red oscillating rotor.
