About Clogau Jewellery

Clogau jewellery requires little introduction. Their rare Welsh gold necklaces, rings, bracelets and earrings are some of the most coveted in the country, renowned for their carefully handcrafted detailing, precious gemstones and royal heritage. If you’re shopping for your own piece of Clogau jewellery but you’d like to know more before committing, here’s everything you need to know about the designer jewellery brand…

A Brief History of Clogau

Long before the Clogau jewellery brand was founded, it was believed that the Romans discovered the first examples of Welsh Gold in 75AD. From then on, particularly during the late 1800’s, large scale mining took place in Wales until the material became scarce and incredibly rare. One of the main mines involved was that of the St. David’s gold mine which was considered the largest and richest of its kind located in the Dolgellau gold mining area but due to the overmining that took place, the location eventually closed in 1911. That was until 1994 when a local man named William Roberts reopened the mine and in doing so discovered a significant amount of high quality Welsh gold.

To bring the rare material to the masses, Roberts released his first range of Clogau jewellery. Each design was characterised by small elements of Welsh gold, a design choice that would help keep the jewellery affordable for its customers and to avoid overmining the material. Over the years, the Clogau jewellery collection has grown to include stunning examples of Welsh gold necklaces, rings, bracelets, earrings, watches, brooches, wedding rings, engagement rings, charms and much more. The brand has also found themselves involved with British royalty with Welsh gold being used to craft the wedding rings of Royal family members including the Queen Mother, Princess Margaret, Princess Diana, The Duchess of Cambridge, and more recently, Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Sussex.

The Clogau Jewellery Collections

The main mission of Clogau is to tell magical stories through beautiful jewellery, and that can certainly be said for the best-selling Clogau Tree of Life jewellery collection. The range of rings, bracelets, pendants and earrings take inspiration from nature and its forever evolving relationship with all life on earth. Each design features a combination of sterling silver and 9ct Welsh gold in shapes of berries, leaves and vines to represent new life forms evolving from old to new.

Another popular design in the Clogau jewellery collections is the Clogau Affinity bead bracelet which is a designed as a nod to the symbiotic relationship we have with our past and how we learn from it to adapt for our future. Each bracelet is a flexible string of sterling silver beads, some perfectly round and other teardrop-shaped, which is then completed by a charm of your choice. The charms form other Clogau jewellery collections like the Initial line which allows you to wear your initials with proud or the Honeybee which adorns each Affinity bead bracelet with an 18ct gold striped bee motif.
