In 1862, Daniel Swarovski was born in Bohemia to a family that owned a crystal cutting company and at a young age he began to master the art of crystal craftsmanship. Then at just 21 years old he decided to establish his own jewellery business and in just three years he employed over 70 employees. Then in 1891, Daniel had a vision to create “a diamond for everyone” and so he invented an electric machine that cut crystals more accurately that ever before. As the 1920’s arrived, so did the desire for spectacular sparkling accents and Swarovski fulfilled this perfectly.
From crystal-embellished fabric headbands to gorgeous crystal jewellery, and crystal beaded dresses, Swarovski grew to new heights during the 1920’s. Leading designers like Coco Chanel and Christian Dior commissioned crystals to be used on some of their own creations and many celebrities showcased the jewellery and crystals in movies and on the red carpet. Some of the most famous examples include Marilyn Monroe who wore Swarovski crystal dresses in "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" and during her famous birthday song to John F Kennedy. Swarovski crystals were also used for the Ruby Slippers in "The Wizard of Oz" and they made appearances in "Sabrina" and "Breakfast at Tiffany's."
