Reviewing the Maurice Lacroix Aikon Ventura Bronze Limited Edition

Jewellery & Watch News

Just 500 pieces of the Maurice Lacroix Aikon Ventura Bronze 43mm watch have been made. The 300-meter water-resistant case is forged from bronze – a material chosen for its underwater exploration and daring dive pursuits

If you don’t have a five-figure budget, the Maurice Lacroix Aikon range is an affordable and accessible option for you. The Aikon watch was first released in 2017 in a quartz version but was launched in an automatic version just a year later. The collection is home to three-handed versions and sportier chronographs and has bred a young generation of dive watches inspired by the earlier Calypso models of the 1990s.

Although I say dive watches, you shouldn’t take that as the only use for the Aikon. It’s an affordable sports watches too, branching off into more rugged aesthetics and a spec to match the more outdoorsy type with the Ventura designs. The Aikon watch collection also signifies Maurice Lacroix’s first flirt with bronze – a popular material for dive watches these days. Bronze is the choice of material for many a dive watch because it can withstand plenty of ocean exploration without becoming easily corroded. Interestingly, it strikes an instant connection with the wrist too. Bronze develops a patina on the wrist, ageing the more is it worn and creating a very unique full-of-character look. Add to that, the confident 43mm case diameter of the new Aikon Ventura Bronze watch and its many useful dive watch features suddenly make for a modern-day tool with plenty of yesteryear charm.

The original Bronze Aikon watch came in a limited edition version with a captivating green sunburst dial coupled with a dark brown ceramic insert. Together, these two hues created a rather unusual colourway that made the dive watch even more appealing, especially when you consider that the bronze material of the case continues to evolve and change as it ages. This time, the bezel of the new Maurice Lacroix Aikon Ventura watch, also a limited edition, is more toned down. Anthracite is the colour of the dial and black is the chosen colour for the bezel. A white 60-minute dive scale on the ceramic bezel promotes legibility and turns only in the counter-clockwise direction. Cleverly, the bezel will never accidentally extend dive time for the wearer. This feature enables you to keep reliable time whilst deciding when to resurface or indeed, take a break during a dive session.

The hands and hour markers on the dial of the new Aikon Ventura Bronze watch are all coated with Super-LumiNova and set against a sun-brushed anthracite dial. In dark conditions, these elements glow richly. In the daytime, the white lume-filled elements are a nice contrast against the shades of the dial and the accompanying bronze-coloured Maurice Lacroix logo. A clear date window can be referenced at 3 o’clock, set underneath a sapphire crystal glass front. The glass is treated with layers of anti-reflective technology, offering a clear view into the dial without the risk of any undesirable glare from the sun.

As mentioned, the case of the new Maurice Lacroix Aikon Ventura measures a 43mn diameter and sits at a height of 12mm on the wrist. Inside the watch’s 300-meter water-resistant case is the Calibre ML115. This self-winding engine is going to provide you with a 38-hour power reserve once fully wound and is based on the tried and tested Sellita SW200-1. Sadly, the movement is concealed behind a closed and screw-down caseback as is the case with many a dive watch. The decision to craft the back of the case from stainless steel as opposed to bronze, of course,  prevents tarnishing of the watch and discolouration of the skin. Each caseback also has the individual limited edition serial number engraved into its surface.

The new Maurice Lacroix Aikon Ventura Bronze Limited Edition watch comes fitted on a matching anthracite-coloured leather strap which couples really nicely with the honey tones of the bronze case. The strap boasts white contrast stitching down the edges and secures onto the wrist with a pin buckle in bronze. The watch also incorporates Maurice Lacroix’s ‘Easy Strap Exchange system’ which is a particularly handy feature, as the watch will pair beautifully with a sportier black rubber strap option too.
