If you’ve been a customer of W Hamond for some years now, you’ll know of our passions for gemstones. For more than 150 years, we have been the Original Whitby Jet Store in the North Yorkshire town of Whitby, specialising in transforming the unique black gemstone of Whitby Jet into coveted pieces of jewellery in our local workshops. We are also experts at designing and handcrafting jewellery set with rare gemstones like Derbyshire Blue John, turquoise, amber, pearl and diamond. Now joining our expansive range of coloured gemstone jewellery is our Greenland Ruby & Sapphire Cross Hearts jewellery collection which features for the first time in W Hamond history, a range of responsibly sourced Greenland rubies and sapphires.
During the 1960’s, on the icy island of Greenland, a set of formations believed to be nearly three billion years old were explored and named Aappaluttoq for the large amount of red corundum crystals found within the earth (Aappaluttoq translates to ‘Big Red’ in Greenlandic). The red crystals found here include dazzling red and pink sapphires and a selection of blue sapphires called Greenland Northern Light sapphires. While the deposits were originally discovered during the 1960’s, it wasn’t until 2016 when permits to mine were approved. The mining undertaken today is carried out by LNS Greenland A/S, a sister company of Greenland Ruby, who have guaranteed their commitment to responsible practices within mining. This ensures environmental, human rights and labour best practices are taken into account every step of the way in order to preserve and protect the region and its people. In 2019, Greenland Ruby became the first coloured gemstone miner to join the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC). In turn, our new Cross Hearts Greenland Ruby and Sapphire jewellery collection meets and exceeds environmentally conscious shoppers’ expectations.
As responsibly sourced gemstones, all our Cross Hearts jewellery set with Greenland rubies and sapphires is part of a mine-to-market track-and-trace program approved by the Greenlandic government. Each precious gemstone is given a unique number allowing its entire journey to be followed, from processing, cutting, sorting to the jewellery manufacture. This is guaranteed by the Certificate of Origin supplied with each of our W Hamond Greenland Sapphire or Greenland Ruby necklaces.
You can choose from a stunning range of Greenland Ruby & Sapphire Cross Hearts jewellery in our handmade collection, including small, medium or large heart-shaped cabochon gemstones captured within elegant 18 carat yellow gold cross settings. The Greenland Ruby Cross Heart Necklaces are breathtaking; the deep red gemstone contrasting royally to the yellow gold. The Greenland Pink Sapphire necklaces are as equally beautiful, opting for a more light, feminine finish with their lipstick pink hue.
