Earlier this year, Swiss watch manufacturer DOXA partnered with retailer Watches of Switzerland to launch a limited edition black ceramic DOXA Army watch. The design honoured a 1960’s DOXA watch designed especially for the Swiss Army's elite diver’s unit which like its successor boasted a matte black case, black 60 minute divers bezel and a highly legible sand-beige dial. Now delivering several of these traits but with a timeless steel case, we’re introduced to the new DOXA Army Steel watch collection…
The new DOXA Army Steel watch delivers much of the same specification as its black ceramic predecessor other than a few tweaks to colours and materials. The case mirrors that of the brand’s influential SUB 300T watch with a curved cushion-shaped architecture but one that is this time kept in classic 316L stainless steel. The diameter remains the same at 50mm but with a relatively short height of only 44.5mm and a thinness of 11.95mm. There’s also a screw in crown, flat sapphire crystal glass and a screw down case back water resistant to 300 metres. There’s no arguing the DOXA Army Steel watch offers everything you want in a diver’s watch.
Alongside the use of steel for the case, another new feature for the DOXA Army watch is the bezel. You can choose from two stylings, one finished in stainless steel and topped by a black ceramic insert and the other in gorgeous bronze with a green ceramic insert. Both versions are undeniably handsome, but as a diver’s watch with a military past, the DOXA Army Steel with the bronze bezel is going to be an easy favourite for many. Both bezels are unidirectional, adorned with 60 minute scales and detialed with serrated edges for easy manipulation, even while you’re wearing thick diving gloves.
The dial of the DOXA Army Steel watch stays in line with both the recent black ceramic limited edition and the original historic design created for the Swiss Army. Its backdrop is finished in a matte sand-beige hue surrounded by a bold black chapter ring. The latter is adorned with graphic rectangular markers in white and beige, extending out into the centre in black. Like the hour markers, the hands dressed in bright orange allow for night-time readability thanks to Superluminova inserts. The DOXA Army Steel watches are completed by a date window at 3 o’clock and the unusual placement of the DOXA and Army logos at 10 and 4 o’clock.
Fuelling the hours, minutes, seconds and date function of the DOXA Army Steel watch is the ETA 2824 automatic winding movement. It delivers reliable timekeeping off the wrist for up to 38 hours as well as a 4Hz frequency and 25 jewels. Completing the DOXA Army watches is a choice of three straps. The steel and black bezel comes on a classic beads of rice bracelet or a black FKM rubber strap, both closed by a folding buckle with divers’ extension. The bronze and green bezel model follows suit but a third green-coloured FKM rubber option. No matter which you choose, you’ll receive your DOXA Army Steel watch in a special camouflage pouch and with a matching NATO camouflage strap.
