As part of their iconic 5 Sports collection, Seiko have announced a remarkable new limited edition: the Seiko 5 Sports Brian May Limited Edition watch inspired by the rock star himself and his legendary Red Special guitar. It’s striking red and black dial evokes the very aesthetic of the instrument while it’s unique packaging and case back commemorates the musician and the guitar he has relied on for more than 40 years.
Brian May’s “Red Special” guitar is legendary. Not only was it the vital instrument that helped make Queen one of the most celebrated rock bands in the world, but the guitar holds a special place in Brian’s heart as it was built by him and his father back in the 1960’s. Its gorgeous dark red wood aesthetic is beautifully portrayed on the dial of the Seiko 5 Sports Brian May Limited Edition watch with a guitar silhouette on the left and a unique wood grain pattern throughout the red. A distinct “Red Special” script has also been added to the dial at 6 o’ clock.
"I am delighted to see this watch come alive, and proud that the creation of me and my dad all those years ago has inspired this collaboration. I love my Seiko and it has served me well for many years. I will wear this new one with pride." – Brian May
In typical Seiko fashion, the dial ensures high legibility with large rounded indexes and bold arrow shaped hands coated in glow in the dark Lumbrite. Powering each of these functions and the day and date window at 3 o clock is the 4R36 automatic winding movement which promises an impressive power reserve of 41 hours. The 24 jewelled Japanese calibre can also be seen through a special glass exhibition case back decorated with Brian May’s signature and the unique limited edition number out of 9,000 pieces.
The case of the Seiko 5 Sports Brian May Limited Edition watch measures to a neat 42.5mm in size and comes fitted with black ceramic unidirectional bezel. It’s 60 minute scale, Lumbrite accents and water resistant rating of 100 metres allows the timepiece to be both a stunning dress watch and a handy piece of diving equipment. The black nylon strap and matching stainless steel buckle add a final sporty touch to the all-round masculine aesthetic.
For one final tribute to Brian May and his “Red Special” guitar, the Seiko 5 Sports Brian May Limited Edition watch is presented in a breathtaking box inspired by the design of the Red Special’s custom flight case. The black leather and silver studded box also features a commemorative coin inside based on the sixpenny piece that Brian has used throughout his career as a plectrum.
