Inspired by the Japanese film Porco Rosso created by animation legend Studio Ghibli, Seiko have launched two stunning new additions to their Presage collection: the SNR047 and SRQ033 Seiko Presage Porco Rosso Limited Edition watches. Boasting stunning handmade enamel dials, two high precision automatic movements and subtle references to the film, these Seiko Presage limited editions are going to become must-haves for luxury watch and manga memorabilia collectors.
First released in 1992, Studio Ghibli’s Porco Rosso features an early 20th-century pilot who transforms himself into a seaplane flying pig. Named Porco, he makes his living chasing sky bandits over Italy and the breathtaking Adriatic Sea. It’s bright animation beautifully brings to life the romance of the early days of aviation and has become Seiko’s inspiration for their latest set of limited editions. The two Seiko Presage Porco Rosso Limited Edition watches are presented in a special box which carries a message from the film’s director Hayao Miyazaki and both stainless steel cases are engraved with the name of Porco Rosso’s aeroplane on the side of the case.
Seiko Presage Porco Rosso SNR047 Limited Edition
First up is the Seiko Presage Porco Rosso SNR047 watch and its breathtaking white enamel dial inspired by the instrument panel of Porco’s Savoia S-21 1920’s sea plane. With aviators requiring only the best legibility during flight, the dial is detailed with clear black Arabic numerals, bold hands and a detailed minutes track to pair with the handy date window at 3 o’ clock. An impressive power reserve indicator between 8 and 9 o’clock is also included to display its power reserve out of 72 hours. The red letter and shield motif at 6 o’clock is the very same found on the rudder of Porco’s plane.
To match with the red seconds hand, the Seiko Presage Porco Rosso SNR047 Limited Edition is fitted with a bright red crocodile leather strap with red, green and white stitching. The model also comes with an additional black crocodile in the box for a second option. The 40mm stainless steel case is kept classic to the Presage aesthetic with a 100 metre water resistant rating and a sapphire crystal case back which provides a stunning view of the automatic calibre housed within. The Spring Drive 5R65 calibre powers each of the functions on the dial and promises an accuracy of ±1 second per day or ±15 seconds per month. For once, the beauty of this movement doesn’t come from its accuracy but from the customised rotor which has been engraved with an image of Porco Rosso’s head along with a quote from the film that reads “un maiale che non vola è solo un maiale” (a pig that doesn’t fly is just a pig) and its limited edition number out of 500 pieces.
Seiko Presage Porco Rosso SRQ033 Limited Edition
The Seiko Presage Porco Rosso SRQ033 watch is likely to be the more popular of the two for its more classic stylings of a vintage pilot’s watch. Its stunning black enamel dial is made effortless to read with large white Arabic numerals, a bold red chronograph seconds hand and a colourful small seconds counter decorated in the colours of the Italian flag. It’s striking tri-compax chronograph layout includes 30 minutes and 12 hours counter counters and a subtle date window between 4 and 5 o’clock.
Compared to its white-dialled counterpart, the Seiko Presage Porco Rosso SRQ033 Limited Edition measures in a little larger with a 42mm stainless steel case with a water resistant rating of 100 metre and fitted with dual-curved sapphire crystal glass. Housed within is one of the brand’s most iconic chronograph calibres, the 8R48, which boasts a 45 hour power reserve, a vertical clutch and column wheel, and Seiko’s unique three-pointed hammer and a heart-shaped cam which ensures perfect and instant synchronization of the hands when the chronograph is reset. Once again, the movement is displayed through an exhibition case back alongside an engraved image of Porco’s head and the limited edition number out of 600 pieces.
