Garmin’s line-up of smartwatches has never been predictable. They surprised the world back in 2019 with two of their biggest releases to date, the Garmin MARQ and Fenix 6, and just a year later, they unveiled their ground-breaking solar-powered Power Lens across a line of Fenix and Instinct watches. Today, the latter is part of the brand’s latest announcement with the new Garmin Instinct 2 watch collection delivering even more technological firsts.
Even before today, the Garmin Instinct watch collection was home to a huge selection of rugged outdoors watches, all equipped with the likes of GPS, GLONASS and Galileo, impressive battery life, ABC sensors, TracBack routing, heart rate monitors, Pulse OX sensors, built-in sports apps and a so much more. They are all also famously engineered to military standards (MIL-STD-810G) for thermal, shock and water resistance ratings to 100 metres with a tough fibre reinforced polymer case measuring to 45mm. Offering exactly that and more, the Garmin Instinct 2 watches welcomes some additional technologies and a new case size.
What’s New?
One of the key differences between the Garmin Instinct and the Garmin Instinct 2 is the choice of a new case size. Previously, the precursors were available only in 45mm cases but now, especially for women and men who prefer smaller-sized smartwatches, Garmin have launched the Garmin Instinct 2S with a reduced profile. As it stands, there are 11 models in total, five with classic battery-powered movements and six with solar powered dials. The five standard models are split down the middle with two Garmin Instinct 2 watches measuring to 45mm and three nicknamed the Garmin Instinct 2S, coming in smaller at 40mm. The larger sizes are currently available in Graphite and Electric Lime and the smaller in Graphite, Deep Orchid and Poppy Red.
A similar pattern follows in the series of Garmin Instinct 2 Solar watches. There are three designs measuring in at 45mm in Graphite, Mist Grey and Tidal Blue and a further three Garmin Instinct 2S Solar models measuring in at 40mm in Graphite, Mist Grey and Neo Tropic. The Garmin Instinct 2 Solar watches boast the brand’s famous Power Lens technology which delivers something we didn’t expect: an unlimited battery life!
Even in the non-solar models, the Garmin Instinct 2 watches boast an impressive battery life. The original Instinct allowed for up 11 days of charge while the second generation boasts up to 28 days in smartwatch mode, 65 days in battery saver watch mode, 30 hours in GPS, 70 hours in max battery GPS mode and 32 days in expedition GPS activity mode.
The Garmin Instinct 2 watches have also introduced a selection of new sports and training apps including a new V02 max training status, new suggested workouts, Fitness Age 2.0, Smart Trainer support, Connected Leadboard, Respiration Tracking, Sleep Widget, new Connect IQ and Garmin Pay. The Garmin Instinct 2 watches also welcome a new HIIT workout profile which tracks your HIIT workouts, including AMRAP, EMOM, Tabata and custom and a women’s health tracking app allowing you to monitor pregnancy and menstrual cycles with symptom logging, nutrition education and more.
