Jewellery & Watch News
If you find yourself completely entranced by Mikimoto pearl jewellery, then know that you are not alone! These captivating and extremely rare gemstones have remained at the forefront of luxury jewellery design since they were first cultivated by Kokichi Mikimoto in 1893. To this day, their beauty and exclusivity excites women of elegance around the globe who are desperate to own and wear their own piece of Mikimoto jewellery.
But why are Mikimoto Cultured pearls so rare? It’s a valid question and one that we are happy to answer. Mikimoto jewellery was born out of a passion for pearls. Kokichi Mikimoto, the eldest son of a noodle-shop owner, became increasingly concerned about the extinction of Ise pearls and the pearl producing oysters in his hometown of Toba in Japan. The pearls had become incredibly scarce due to over-harvesting so in order to prevent their extinction, Mikimoto decided to grow his own pearls in oyster beds on Ojima Island.
After several years of experimentation, Mikimoto realised that the Akoya oyster produced the highest quality pearl and by introducing a particle into the flesh of the oyster, it encouraged secretions of nacre, an organic-inorganic composite material which builds up to create a pearl’s lustrous finish. On July 11, 1893, Mikimoto discovered within the folds of an oyster the very first cultivated pearl that was as worthy as a natural one.
Soon after becoming the very man who invented the cultured pearl, Mikimoto decided to start his own jewellery company where he used his cultured pearls to create breathtaking collections of necklaces, bracelets, rings and earrings. He ensured that only the best quality pearls were used within his designs and never allowed inferior grade materials to cheapen his standards. He was even famously known for shovelling unworthy pearls into a bucket of fire. This was more than a publicity stunt; it was a display of his passion for quality, dedication to his business and the ethics that still stand today.
Mikimoto jewellery not only showcases these perfect pearls but they are crafted with only the finest materials like 18 carat gold, diamonds and sapphires with high attention paid to every detail.
