By now, we are all well-versed in singing Happy Birthday to wash our hands effectively and we have a pretty good understanding of what products we should be using on our kitchen worktops, door handles and steering wheels. But what about our jewellery? As studies find that the COVID-19 virus can survive up to 72 hours on hard surfaces like metal and plastic, it is more important than ever to clean your jewellery properly and safely.
During such an uncertain time, wearing our favourite pieces of jewellery can bring some much needed normality, whether that be the sparkly engagement ring you never take off, your trusty timepiece gifted by a loved one or a favourite necklace that makes you smile. But while wearing these items on a daily basis, they will come into contact with lots of germs and bacteria and will need to be cleaned regularly.

- A bowl
- Warm water
- Mild dish soap
- Soft bristled toothbrush
To get the best advice on how to clean jewellery, we asked our Workshop Manager, Paul Barker, for his best tips. “The safest way to clean your jewellery at home is with warm water, mild dish soap and a soft-bristled toothbrush. Let your jewellery soak for a while to allow any stubborn debris to loosen up, and then take the toothbrush and gently scrub the piece down.” He also advises “always avoid strong alcohol sanitizers and any form of bleach as these will dry out any gemstones and may lead the surface to damage or crack.”
After you have cleaned your jewellery with warm water and soap, we highly recommend that you use a polishing cloth and some sparkle dip to bring that unmissable shine back to the piece.
