How To Clean Jewellery To Help Protect Against Coronavirus

Jewellery & Watch News

Surrounding all the talk about washing our hands, many of you have asked us what’s the best way to clean your jewellery to help protect against Coronavirus. Like our hands, our jewellery is constantly exposed to germs and bacteria, especially our rings which are centre stage on our fingers. We use our hands for most day to day tasks so its especially important to keep rings clean and free from any nasty particles.

Unlike the usual disinfectant products that you use on your kitchen worktops, toilet flushers, door handles and steering wheels, jewellery must be cleaned with a gentle solution so not to damage the metal or any gemstones. To get the best advice on how to clean jewellery, we asked our Workshop Manager, Paul Barker, for his best tips. “The safest way to clean your jewellery at home is with warm water, mild dish soap and a soft-bristled toothbrush. Let your jewellery soak for a while to allow any stubborn debris to loosen up, and then take the toothbrush and gently scrub the piece down.” He also advises “avoid strong alcohol sanitizers and any form of bleach as these will dry out any gemstones and may lead the surface to damage or crack.”

Once you have cleaned your jewellery with warm water and soap, we recommend you use one of our handy jewellery cleaning kits to bring that unmissable sparkle back to the piece. We have a fantastic selection of silver polishing cloths, gold polishing cloths, silver sparkle dip, jewel sparkle dip and diamond dazzle sticks all available to order direct to your door.

With so much uncertainty in the world at the moment, it’s good to know that cleaning our jewellery can be done simply and safely from home. This means we can carry on wearing all our favourite rings, necklaces, bracelets and earrings to cheer us up – even if it is just around the house!
